Aquatic Plant Profile: Water ribbons

Water ribbons (Cycnogeton procera) are a diverse indigenous plant for the margins of your pond, however, can be used in two very different applications. This plant grows to a height of about 450mm on pond margins, however if placed underwater and in a higher flow body of water, the foliage will actually bend and flow along the water's surface. Water ribbons have a clumping habit to about 300mm and forms a dense patch.

Water ribbons have an extensive root system allowing it to soak up a lot of nutrients thus cleaning up ponds very effectively. It can be grown in most pond media such as sand, gravel, pebbles. The propagation method for Water ribbons is by division of clumps. Clumps with roots can be taken from the mother plant and replanted in a medium like gravel or sand and you will create new plants very easily.

Full sun or part shade positions are both fine for this species. It will also benefit from a slow release pond fertiliser tablet annually (inserted into the growing pot/bag).

When used on pond margins the thick bunches provide an excellent habitat for water bugs and insects to live and breed, providing food for other pond inhabitants.

The tubers of water ribbons can be eaten raw or cooked, and leaves are toxic.

Water ribbons do not have a dormancy period and will grow all year.

Water ribbons will grow above and below the water's surface, but will only flower above, the large flower spikes add nice interest over the warmer months, usually from August to April. The flowers are also frequented by a vast array of insects, including bees.
