Each fish will have unique markings and colouring but will look similar to the fish pictured.
Murray River Rainbowfish are identifiable by their gorgeous blue shimmer, males can be identified by the red spots on their tail, black borders on their fins, they also tend to have a 'sharper' dorsal fin.
Rainbows are excellent examples of fish for beginners because they are extremely hardy and are not prone to many diseases common to other fish. They are suitable in fish communities and can be mixed with other larger species. They are great for keeping mosquitos at bay if the pond has minimal water movement.
Feeding
Rainbowfish feed on various insects, water invertebrates and sometimes algae. It is recommended to
feed your pond fish a flake or pellet
diet to encourage growth rate and breeding behaviours.
Rainbows are frog and tadpole safe and will not bother or interfere with their habitat and breeding cycles.
Growth and breeding
This rainbowfish can reach a maximum size of 12cm and will readily breed in most pond settings. During the Summer months in Australia’s southern states when the water is warmer, they will breed and lay their eggs on filamentous foliage such as milfoil or elodea, in warmer states like Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia if the water temperature is above 20 degrees, these fish will breed all year round.
