Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon - Mogurnda adspersa

Donned the 'Zombie fish' because the subspecies was deemed to be extinct in 1998 until it was rediscovered in 2019 almost two decades after being declared extinct, this fish has come back from the edge of true extinction, with great efforts by many Victorian breeders, clubs and farms. Now fairly wide spread, with many reintroduction successes, the fish, although critically endangered is in a much more stable position.

Thankfully the hard efforts of local breeders has allowed this fish to return to the hobby and now hobbyists can keep this little piece of success in their own ponds.

Purple Spotted Gudgeons are small predatorial fish, feeding on water insects and as they grow smaller species of fish. At a maximum size of 150mm they are fairly peaceful fish and should not bother any other widely available native pond fish but may consume the baby fish if they are to appear in the pond. Gudgeons are great for pest control, eating beetles and other pesky water insects that may bite swimmers while they are enjoying their recreation ponds.

To supplement their diet you can feed pellets or flakes to Purple Spot Gudgeons but they will mostly look after themselves when it comes to diet, you may find they like to hang around pond lighting at night snatching unwary insects that are attracted to the lights.
